Checking in with ICCR Intern Abroad – Mercedes Wiegel

Candid portrait of Mercedes in Florence, Italy

Encountering difference has been the defining aspect of my study abroad journey thus far. Since arriving in Rome in January, I’ve been fortunate to explore not only the rich culture and history of Italy but also venture into new countries like Denmark, Hungary, and France.

As an international student studying in the US, going abroad  for a second time has been an extraordinary opportunity. Each city I’ve visited and every cultural encounter has added a layer to my understanding of myself and the world around me.

While adapting to a new environment always presents its challenges, these past few months have been transformative. I’ve begun to recognize how my nationality and background shape my identity, and I’m starting to appreciate the subtle yet profound differences between various cultures. This newfound perspective has truly broadened my worldview.

In addition to learning Italian, my coursework has focussed on urban studies, providing fresh insights into the social dynamics of cities and how people navigate and define these spaces. My current focus lies on an individual ethnography research project centered around Bar Willy, a local coffee bar in my neighborhood, Trastevere. Through this research, I’ve not only created connections with the employees but also become acquainted with the regular customers, offering me a deeper immersion into Roman culture.

The personal and academic growth I’ve experienced abroad seamlessly integrates into my work with the ICCR, that I have continued to do virtually this semester. I have primarily worked on the formulation of IVLP proposals, including one that got recently accepted about US Energy Policy, Security, and Innovation. Through researching resources I have increased my understanding of global energy dynamics and innovation landscapes and I am excited to learn the next steps of organising an IVLP as we progress to the next steps of .

Throughout this semester, I’ve come to view IVLP programs from a new perspective, recognizing that sharing perspectives and knowledge across cultural and ethnic backgrounds is crucial for building long lasting relationships. This realization has deeply influenced my long-term career aspirations. I am passionate about cultivating cross-cultural understanding and collaboration on a global scale. Whether it’s through diplomacy, advocacy, or nonprofit work, I hope to leverage my personal experiences to bridge cultural divides and promote peace and cooperation among nations.
